The Peace Corps will provide me with the basics like medical stuff, vitamins, bug repellent, dental floss etc. but its little creature comforts that I miss. Most necessities are available in Uzbekistan but are really crappy and expensive on a Peace Corps Volunteer salary. (I have no idea how the locals afford this stuff. I guess they go without quite a bit. That, and they are not dropping money in internet cafés!)

So, if you are looking for things to put in a care package, this is the place. I'm not picky but if you see my favorites on sale, it will be just like being home for me! ; ) Watch for stuff on sale - even if I can't use it myself, I can always trade it with another volunteer for something good or give it as a gift to a local. You would not believe what these people go nuts over.

Here is a list of things I can NEVER have too much of that I cannot get here:
  1. COFFEE
  2. PEANUT BUTTER
  3. HEINZ KETCHUP
  4. PARMASEAN CHEESE

Crossword puzzles or other one person activities that will stimulate my brain on long lonely nights.

ˇ        DVDs - some other PCVs have DVD players on their laptops and watching movies in English is a great treat.

ˇ        Music CDs - If you see anything used or something that you bought but never listen to, send it.  I really miss The Beatles and have been wondering why I dont have any of their CDs.  I think its because you can get a Beatles-fix easy enough just listening to the radio in the U.S. I can try to send DVDs and CDs back to you after I use them but cant make any promises with the mail.  Also, if have mistakenly bought something in the past that you hate and are pretty sure I will too, chances are someone here will like it.

ˇ        Magazines - Even magazines you know I don't read at home.  Its great to get snapshots of reality and the pictures are great for my class.

Maps - I'd like to decorate the classroom with some maps.  And they are also good for class lessons.  So send old atlases and maps.  Or if you are a AAA member and could get some for free send those.

Backpacks - They ones here are really poor quality.  Sometimes they are on sale for really cheap in the U.S.  (I bought one at Staples for $4 before I left.)  They would make great gifts here or prizes for my students.

T-Shirts - Yes, I have finally found a use for all those free t-shirts you get a various events...the Uzbeks love them!  You'd be surprised at what I see walking around on the people here.  So far, the most puzzling was a shirt with pictures of both the Statue of Liberty and Monica Lewinsky on it!  Weird.  Anyway, these also make good gifts and prizes.  And I have a couple of t-shirts that are getting pretty worn here and are also huge on me now.  So, I could use a couple of new ones too.
